Presenting a new opportunity for Modern collecting, Wright
will be offering a vast library of books on art, architecture, design
and photography. The sale will feature a carefully vetted selection
of 20th century reference materials including monographs, surveys, posters,
exhibition catalogs, photographs and ephemera.
The library features rare and out of print material on artists and designers
such as Jean Prouve, Donald Judd, Ed Ruscha, Bauhaus and de Stijl, Andy
Warhol, Frank Lloyd Wright, Carlo Mollino, Kasimir Malevich, Ellsworth
Kelly, Josef Albers, among many others. The library traces the roots
of the Avant-Garde from its beginnings in Vienna (Josef Hoffmann, Otto
Wagner, Adolf Loos) at the turn of the 20th century through de Stijl
(Gerrit Reitveld, J.J.P. Oud, Theo van Doesburg) and Bauhaus (Marcel
Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, Max Bill) movements in the teens and twenties.
The collection continues on to represent 1930s Paris (Pierre Chareau,
Eileen Gray, Robert Mallet-Stevens) and travels across the ocean to
North American post-WWII developments (George Nelson, Charles &
Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi), culminating with late European use of new
materials and technologies in contemporary design and architecture (Joe
Colombo, Ettore Sottsass, Vernor Panton).
Other scarcities include material on all major modernist movements:
Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Hard
Edge, Pop Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art.
Also being offered are books from the Collection of Arthur and Betty
Rubin, featuring numerous books and objects relating to Gertrude Stein,
T. S. Eliot, and Jean Cocteau.
This is a rare occasion that such a comprehensive and expertly crafted
modernist library is available at a single auction.
