Wright’s third annual Mass Modern auction is a one-day sale featuring 600 lots of 20th century designs and objects offered mostly without reserve. Mass Modern auction preview is now posted online.
This week Wright hosted our spring Important Design auction (02 June) and our Post War + Contemporary Art auction (04 June). Stand out results from the design sale include Eliel Saarinen’s shallow candy bowl and Harry Bertoia’s Dandelion (view design results), while Seal of Approval by graffiti artist Futura 2000 garnered a lot of attention in the art sale and sold for twice its estimate (view art results).
Wright’s Important Design and Post War + Contemporary Art auction previews are open daily from 10am – 5pm through 3 June.
Wright presents the Futuro house in our Important Design auction (2 June). This futuristic mobile dwelling, designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968, is internationally admired for its unusual space age aesthetic and the ideals is symbolizes. Last night Spaces Etc./An Exercise in Utility, designer Ron Gilad’s first solo exhibition, opened at Wright. Attendance was strong and Zoё Ryan of The Art Institute of Chicago joined Ron Gilad in an engaging conversation on the works he developed for the exhibition. The exhibition is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm through 09 May 2009.

Works for Spaces Etc. / An Exercise in Utility, a solo exhibition of Ron Gilad’s designs to be hosted at Wright later this month (opening 28 April), arrived in Chicago this week. Our enthusiasm for the show escalates as the unique works – no longer only the ideas of a designer – are assembled and photographed for the catalog to accompany the exhibition.
Today at The Art Institute of Chicago, scholar and researcher Phyllis Ross lectures on Gilbert Rohde and his designs. As promotion for her new book Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living, Ross provides a thorough evaluation of Rohde’s contribution to 20th century American design.
The results from the March 2009 auction were encouraging, as liquidity returned to the market. The sell-through rates rose from the lows set in December and there were large number of bidders participating throughout the day - clear signs of renewed interest in our field. more
Modern Design auction preview is open daily from 10 am – 5 pm through 23 March. Wright specialists will be hosting guided tours of the preview on 21 + 22 March at noon.
