Designer: Matteo Thun

Matteo Thun first came to prominence as part of Memphis, designing ceramics and light fixtures notable for their ease and charm. For the past three decades, Thun has applied the radical design collective's consideration for everyday items into an architectural and design practice built around a holistic design approach and a "Zero Design" sensibility.

We create things that people can understand and use intuitively. It’s almost a subconscious reaction: we try to create timeless icons.

Four Things to Know about Matteo Thun

Thun originally wanted to be a pilot, but was urged to study architecture by his mother, who was also an architect.

He cites the modest Chiavari chairs in his home as a continual inspiration because they "can’t be categorized into any particular style, nobody knows who designed them and they weigh very little."

Eschewing a "signature style," Thun prefers to design buildings and interiors that are not immediately recognizable as being by him, trading the ego of personality for a holistic and sensitive approach.

Thun designed the iconic white espresso cup and saucer for Italian coffee company illy in 1991.

Memphis had an important formative influence on my career and provided a platform to experiment with the challenges of constant innovation.

Matteo Thun

Matteo Thun b. 1952

Matteo Thun is a designer and architect, known as one of the co-founders of the influential Memphis group. Born in Bolzano, Italy in 1952, Thun studied architecture at the University of Florence and upon moving to Milan in 1978 he met Ettore Sottsass. Though only part of Memphis for a short time, he made a lasting impact with his distinctive ceramics, accessories and lighting fixtures, notable for their Industrial Age-inspired forms, stylish colors and refined but playful presence. In 1984, he left Sottsass Associati to establish his own studio and also serve as the Creative Director of Swatch, a position he held from 1990 to 1993. He has been awarded the Compasso d’Oro three times, the Green Good Design Award in 2011 and the resorts he has designed are world-renowned for their holistic approach to sustainability, wellness and sensitivity to space and natural surroundings. Thun currently heads Matteo Thun & Partners, which has offices in Milan and Shanghai and practices “Zero Design” or “no design” to create designs and interiors that are simple, refined, durable and timeless.

The idea [of the Milan school of design] was that in the morning you work on a spoon and in the evening you work on town planning. This holistic process is quite demanding, but I believe I can continue that legacy.
