Sori Yanagi

Butterfly stool
Japan, 1956
rosewood plywood, brass
17 w × 12 d × 15 h in (43 × 30 × 38 cm)

Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool combines the disparate traditions of Eastern philosophy and aesthetics with Western modernism. The stool echoes less of the traditional aspects of Japanese furniture, and instead appears indebted to the kimono. Literature: Design Since 1945, Philadelphia Museum of Art, pg. 137

estimate: $2,000–3,000
result: $3,186
