DAX with prototypical base
Zenith Plastics
USA, c. 1950
fiberglass, painted steel, rubber
25 w × 22 d × 31½ h in (63 × 56 × 80 cm)

During the development of the Shell chair base, an additional cross brace was added for stability. This was seen later as a redundancy in the structure of the base, and removed for the production version. The removal of the cross base allowed the bases to be stacked, streamlining the packing, shipping and storage of the chairs.
