Guido Balsamo Stella and Franz Pelzel

This monumental lidded vase executed at Vetreria Ferro Toso in 1926 affords us a rare and early glimpse into the dynamic collaboration between designer Guido Balsamo Stella and master engraver Franz Pelzel. Beginning in 1921 the two artists worked together to create a unique type of art glass that employed highly detailed surface carving executed in the Art-Deco style. At this time carving was not part of the Murano glass oeuvre, but the tasteful work of Stella and Pelzel became popular with critics and the public alike.

In this particular piece we see a dynamic composition of mythological figures and stylized celestial bodies articulated in incredible detail—these characteristics, in combination with monumental scale, make this vase a true masterwork.
