Martin Craig and Ann Hatfield were the winning designers in Category E, Furniture for a one-room apartment, in the Organic Design in Home Furnishings  competition hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1940. For the competition, Craig and Hatfield submitted case goods in a variety of sizes and configurations, a sofa-bed, bed, dressing table, night table, bureaus and two chair designs one of which is similar to the one offered here. The present lot features the same organic lines of the chair included in the competition only now it is more elegant. This version also differs in that the arms and feet are now a single continuous unit.
