Cuban artist collective Los Carpinteros was founded by Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes, Dagoberto Rodriguez Sanchez, and Alexandre Arrechea in 1992. Eschewing the notion of the lone artist, Los Carpinteros instead aligned themselves with the traditional model of a guild comprised of artisans and skilled laborers. Their work reflects this ethos, taking the form of drawing, sculpture, and installation that exists between art, architecture, and design, often incorporating utopic thinking.

'Los Carpinteros' seemed perfect for us because we wanted to investigate issues of the way art is made, the way that an object is fabricated. To speak of a carpenter is to speak of the way something is made.
