This work was acquired directly from the artist by the original owners, a young couple who had recently settled in New York City. Like Hofmann, they were German immigrants living in the heavily Bavarian Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan. (Hofmann himself would move farther downtown and occupy numerous spaces in Greenwich Village). The couple was introduced to the artist through mutual friends in the tightknit immigrant community, and acquired this piece from him over sixty years ago.
My aim in painting is to create pulsating, luminous, and open surfaces that emanate a mystic light, in accordance with my deepest insight into the experience of life and nature.
