Wright presents Shiro Kuramata and Hiroshi Sugimoto: Works from the Absent Past, an exhibition and auction of important and rare works by Shiro Kuramata presented alongside the celebrated Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Using as a touchstone Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s 1933 In Praise of Shadows, a book Kuramata and Sugimoto both acknowledge as a presence in their thinking, the exhibition will highlight compelling works of art and design which explore light and shadow and the correlative themes of time and its passage.

Presented in Wright’s 980 Madison Avenue gallery, the exhibition includes furniture from one of Kuramata’s most important interior commissions, the Esprit House, Tokyo, alongside works from one of Kuramata’s last, Laputa restaurant. Other limited edition and commissioned works by Kuramata, such as a dining table created for Kuramata’s friend and collaborator Tamotsu Yagi, will be presented alongside small and large format Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Works from the Absent Past will be on view January 6 – January 29, 2015, with a special reception from 6-8 pm on January 8. All lots will be featured in a dedicated catalogue, designed in collaboration with renowned designer, Tamotsu Yagi, who will act as creative director for this exhibition. All lots will be sold at auction January 29, 2015 at 12 pm CT in Chicago.
