stack-laminated and carved walnut 29½ h × 56 w × 28 d in (75 × 142 × 71 cm)
Wendell Castle is the preeminent figure in the American Craft movement and has been since the 1960s. This important sofa from 1967 is a seminal example of his work. The sofa is crafted from stack-laminated walnut, his signature material that allows extensive carving and provides structural strength to support the fantastical, organic lines of his mature style. Castle is not bound by the usual scope of the hand-crafted woodworker; he pushes form and approaches material as a sculptor. The results push at our understanding of craft, fine art and design – lines that Castle delights in blurring. Castle’s work is in the collection of over 40 museums worldwide; a closely related sofa form from the same year is in the permanent collection of The Art Institute of Chicago.
Carved signature to base: [WC 67].
