In 1869, Henricus Burgers patented the first design for a Flywheel slicer in Deventer, Holland. Burgers slicer featured a flat blade with a rotating plate that moved in a semi-circle, ensuring that the blade touched the meat only where it was being cut. With this design, Burgers achieved what Berkel would master almost thirty-years later using a concave blade. Burgers produced only a small number of slicers before the company transitioned to manufacturing bicycles.
