Wire and Snips
Earrings for Sophie Reagan Herr
Sophie Reagan Herr moved to Paris with her mother, Caroline Dudley Reagan in 1924. There, Caroline became close friends with Alexander Calder who had also relocated to Paris in 1926. Nearly twenty years later, he visited Sophie, Caroline and Caroline’s second husband, Joseph Delteil, at their home, La Tuilerie de Mason, in Montpellier. There, Calder made the present lot, a pair of delicate wire earrings, as a gift for Sophie. She fondly remembers the artist forming the earrings’ shape around her own ears, and that he always carried a spool of wire and snips in his pocket.
