The present lot comes from the collection of artist and author, Valerie Jakober Furth. Born in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia in 1926, Furth was deported to Auschwitz as a young woman in 1944 along with twelve of her relatives. Liberated in 1945, she emigrated to New York in 1948 where she studied painting and sculpture with Louise Nevelson. In the years following, Furth enjoyed a career as an accomplished artist, and in the 1970s she began work on a series of paintings based on her experiences during the Holocaust. In 1989, Furth published a memoir titled Cabbages and Geraniums: Memories of the Holocaust, illustrated with over sixty of her works.
