A Family of Four
Before the Memphis show in 1988, I spent the weekend skiing in Courmayeur, Italy. One afternoon, I sat in a restaurant and spent the day creating eighteen pages of sketches. The sketches expand upon the language of my lamps for Memphis. I shared these sketches with Ettore. There were four ideas which I favored and Ettore encouraged me to prototype these works. He loved their architectural presence and playfulness. I followed Ettore’s suggestion and by then end of April 1988, I made four half-scale models and prototyped each lamp in impeccable detail in brushed aluminum.
The four lamps were always intended to be one-of-a-kind; although, these lamps are a family, a family of four siblings sharing a common bond, but with different personalities.
