Philolaos Tloupas

The J. Speed and Martha Carroll Commission

After happening upon works by the Greek sculptor Philolaos Tloupas in a Paris gallery, American collectors J. Speed and Martha Carroll commissioned him to make the following five lots for their Paris home in 1969. The furniture was designed to provide a certain intimacy in its functionality, as expressed in particular by the slimness of the dining table, conceived to retain the closeness of those who would sit at it. When the couple returned to New York in the 1970s, they brought the furniture with them; the following lots remained in their Greenwich Village home until now.
