This pale-yellow Oval Storage Box with unusual, left-facing swallowtail lappers was purchased by pioneering collectors Edward Deming and Faith Andrews, whose extensive collection and numerous publications established the field of Shaker scholarship in the early-20th century. In The Community Industries of the Shakers (1933), Andrews describes the evolution of the oval box industry at the New Lebanon Shaker community, noting the form’s “novelty and usefulness had wide appeal.”
