Paintings and Sculptures by William Sellers
Wright is the first auction house to bring to market the work of William Sellers (1929–2019), a sculptor and painter whose career spanned six decades. Included in this collection are early sculptural works in metal that recall the monumentality and geometric clarity of Tony Smith and later paintings, in line with hard-edge abstraction artists such as Ilya Bolotowsky and Ellsworth Kelly. Sellers was featured in the Whitney Biennial in 1966 and 1968, taught sculpture at University of Rochester for many years, and worked in Wendell Castle's studio in the 1980s and 1990s. Wright is excited to share William Sellers' precise and thoughtful body of work.
I like [these drawings] simply based on my intuitive/visceral response....What shows is that
they are still alive and working. They have taught me a lot and carried me away.
